GEODESIC DOME
Anand Shah, Rishi Bajaj, Sudarshan Choudhary
The geodesic dome is designed and constructed by students of Faculty of Technology at CEPT University. The idea was to design and build a structure which visually represents the forces inherent in the system. The tension and compression members are detailed in such a way that they visually represent the language of these forces. This articulation also tends to reduce the material in the structural system. The members are made compositely out of wood and metal. Twisting of metal strips increases the member moment of inertia and helps in achieving structural efficiency. Because of the requirement of a precise fabrication process, the project provided a great learning experience with carpentry and metal fabrication. The project gave some great takeaways in terms of the importance of detailing in architectural design.
